Changed sexual sensation after childbirth

Dear mom, many women lack the desire for sex after giving birth. Does this sound familiar to you? Don’t worry, you are not alone. But how can you change this and when can you become sexually active again? Find out today how a trained pelvic floor can have a positive effect on your sex life! #pelvicfloorseries

When can I become sexually active after giving birth?

Actually, there are no medical reasons against becoming intimate with your partner shortly after giving birth. For those of us who are rash: it’s better to wait until the lochia stops completely (it usually lasts 4-6 weeks) before getting back into sexual life, because there is an increased risk of infection during this time, as long as the birth wounds haven’t completely healed. However, if you can’t wait, be sure to use a condom for protection. This is basically okay as long as it feels good to you and you do not feel any pain during the act, e.g. after an episiotomy or a caesarean section.

Trained pelvic floor for more feeling…

You gave birth and now you notice a significant change in your sex life? If you think you can say goodbye to the supposedly most beautiful thing in the world as a new mom, you’re wrong! Because for a more intense sex experience, the tightness of the vagina itself is less important. What is crucial is control over the pelvic floor and the ability to tense the pelvic floor muscles. However, good basic tension also tightens the vagina at the same time.

During pregnancy and childbirth, the pelvic floor is heavily stressed and stretched. Thus, it is first weakened and it feels as if you no longer have control over the pelvic floor. Therefore, it is very important to strengthen the muscles after birth, because the pelvic floor has many important functions. You can already start in the postpartum phase with gentle exercises and special breathing techniques. By the way: Sex after birth is also training for the pelvic floor, but this alone is of course not enough, so you should definitely follow the other mommy exercises.

The “love muscle”

The pelvic floor has many important functions such as support, lifting, carrying, stabilizing. If you stand upright and have a good body feeling you will feel better in general. A positive side effect of a trained “love muscle”, as the word implies, is: the increased desire for sex! So not only you benefit from it, but also your partner. A trained pelvic floor increases the sensitivity of the intimate area, so that arousal is perceived more strongly. Get ready for much more intense orgasms!

My tip: Make sure you start pelvic floor training during pregnancy so you can rebuild your muscles postnatally in even less time. And also for the time during pregnancy a strengthened pelvic floor brings the same advantages for you. Such as increased pleasure in your sex life!

So the good news is that being a mom and the desire for sex are not necessarily mutually exclusive. But don’t feel pressured, just try to incorporate some pelvic floor exercises into your daily routine. And little by little you will notice how good it is for your health, and how your desire is going to increase again. The bad news: Nothing comes from nothing, mama! Pay special attention to your pelvic floor after birth and believe me your private life will thank you for it … 🙂
